This is where epistemic game theory enters — the study of what players believe, know, and believe others know. It digs deeper, exploring how nested beliefs shape strategic behavior.
The Core Idea
In any strategic setting — from chess to diplomacy — success often hinges not on brute calculation but on modeling the opponent’s mind. Epistemic game theory formalizes this intuition. It studies belief hierarchies (I believe that you believe that I believe…) and their impact on decision-making.

Aumann’s Agreement Theorem
If two rational agents share the same prior and their beliefs are common knowledge, they must agree and cannot agree to disagree. If they don’t, then something either one or more of the following statements are true:
- One or more agents are irrational
- One of the agents has information the other does not
- Their prior beliefs are different
Common Knowledge and Backward Induction
Backward induction — solving games from the end — only works if rationality is common knowledge. If even one player doubts another’s rationality, the entire prediction chain collapses.
Infinite Belief Hierarchies (BDGP Theorem)
Strategic thinking isn’t just recursive — it’s infinitely recursive. To fully model rational opponents, one must encode endless layers of belief. This has major implications for AI and game design: true strategy requires deep mental modeling.
Rationalizability and Iterated Best Response
Not all strategies are Nash equilibria, but some are still “reasonable” if they best respond to some belief about the opponent. This broader class is called rationalizable strategies.
Limits of Self-Modeling (Brandenburger–Keisler)
A consistent agent cannot hold a complete model of itself — a result with echoes of Gödel’s incompleteness. Even the most rational mind cannot fully introspect its own structure.
